Primary vs Secondary SSIC Code

Singapore companies can register up to two SSIC codes with ACRA — a primary and an optional secondary.

Primary SSIC Code

  • • Required for all ACRA registrations
  • • Represents your main revenue-generating activity
  • • Determines which regulator oversees your business
  • • Used in official industry statistics

Secondary SSIC Code

  • • Optional — only needed for a second distinct activity
  • • Must be different from the primary code
  • • Useful for diversified businesses (e.g. retail + import)
  • • Can be updated via Bizfile at any time

How to Choose the Right SSIC Code

Selecting the correct code matters for compliance and licensing. Follow these steps for accurate classification.

01

Describe Your Main Activity

Write a plain-language description of what your company will primarily do — e.g. "build and sell mobile applications" or "provide accounting services to SMEs".

02

Use the SSIC Code Search Tool

Enter keywords from your description into our SSIC Code Search tool. You can also look up peer companies in the same space to see which codes they use.

03

Select Primary and Secondary Codes

Choose one primary SSIC code for your main revenue activity. If you do a second distinct activity, pick a secondary SSIC code. Most companies only need one.

04

Verify with ACRA or a Corporate Secretary

Before filing, confirm your chosen code with ACRA's SSIC 2025 publication or your corporate secretary. The right code affects regulatory requirements and licensing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SSIC code?▾

An SSIC (Singapore Standard Industrial Classification) code is a 5-digit number that categorises a Singaporean business by its economic activity. Every company registered with ACRA must declare at least one primary SSIC code.

Why do SSIC codes matter?▾

SSIC codes determine which industry your business belongs to for statistical reporting, regulatory oversight, and licensing purposes. Some industries (e.g. banking, healthcare, education) require additional licences from specific regulators identified by SSIC code.

What is the difference between primary and secondary SSIC codes?▾

The primary SSIC code identifies your main business activity (usually the one generating the most revenue). If you conduct a second distinct activity, you may declare a secondary SSIC code. Only two codes are allowed per entity on ACRA filings.

Can I change my SSIC code after registration?▾

Yes. You can update your SSIC code(s) by filing a change of business activities with ACRA via Bizfile. The change takes effect immediately and is reflected in public records.

How is SSIC 2025 different from earlier versions?▾

SSIC 2025 is the current revision, updated from SSIC 2020. It introduces refined codes for emerging sectors. ACRA migrated all entities to SSIC 2025 codes automatically.

How many SSIC sections are there?▾

There are 22 sections (labelled A through V), each covering a broad economic area — from Agriculture (A) to Extra-Territorial Organisations (V). Each section breaks down into divisions, groups, and finally 5-digit class codes.

What if no SSIC code perfectly matches my business?▾

Choose the closest code to your primary activity. For multi-faceted businesses, use the primary code for your highest-revenue activity and the secondary code for another significant activity. When in doubt, consult ACRA's detailed SSIC 2025 guide or a licensed corporate secretary.

Where can I find a company's SSIC code?▾

Each entity's SSIC codes are publicly visible on their profile page on SGP Directory and on ACRA Bizfile. Search by company name or UEN to view their registered industry codes.
